There is perhaps no better word to describe the feeling you get when viewing Amy Hashim’s paintings. Everything about it has the tendency to take your breath away from its harmony of colors to its bold yet elegant strokes to its exquisite details.

Life & Culture : Women In Art

Amy has come a long way from the time when she was just doodling on extra bits of paper, almost 20 years ago.

But art is not something strange in Amy’s life. Her late father, who was an art teacher himself, has opened up the wonderful world of colors and movement and curves to this amiable lady that Amy feels art is something that always in her – it was just waiting to take flight into bursts of colors.

Combining the emotions and movement of Romanticism and expressing accuracy and capturing light through Realism, Amy’s art invokes both emotions and reactions the way arts are supposed to make you feel. Her signature style in her paintings has captured the hearts and eyes of many that Amy has won awards from international agencies including an exclusive invitation to exhibit solo in New York. She also has her own private gallery in her house in Subang Jaya, which was officiated by Dato Hashim Othman, the CEO of Hektar on 13 April this year.

Amy is from Kelantan and this perhaps translates her love for the sea and nature in her paintings. From koi fish to water lilies to sky filled with golden clouds, you can be certain to discover her love for nature and at the same time appreciate her eye for details.

Growing up by Pantai Cahaya Bulan in Kota Bharu stemmed Amy’s love for wide open spaces. As a child, she played by the beach, watching the waves crashed on the sand, and casting her gaze over the horizon where the sea meets the sky. Amy spent countless hours running along the beach with her siblings while their footprints were washed away by the foamy waves of the South China Sea. These memories, though many years ago, are still fresh in Amy’s mind and she translates these memories, this voice of the sea, into her paintings. Every stroke tells her story, every color is an expression of her childhood’s voice.

and poetry is painting that speaks."

Moving from paintings to wearable art is perhaps another of Amy’s blossoming passion for the arts.

Other than enjoying her paintings in galleries or exhibitions, art enthusiasts are also able to wear their favorite painting in the form of scarves and shawls. Printed on silk and premium quality fabric, Amy’s wearable art is as beautiful and becoming as her painted work. Her scarves and shawls look good as headscarves for the hijab women, or you can style it with your office attire, or you can even wear it as a beachwear.

Each scarf or shawl can take anything between 3 weeks to a month to produce as Amy oversees over each step of the process to ensure only the best is produced and nothing is flawed – just as how she would produce her painted work. However, due to the fine work and quality of her wearable art, art and fashion enthusiasts alike would be more than happy to wait for their piece to be ready.

Wearable art may not be something everyone can appreciate as there are wearable arts that can be a little out there, but Amy’s scarves are subtle and dainty with just a little hint of playfulness to give the wearer a sense of individuality and signature style. From dark shades to vibrant orange, anyone and everyone can find something they might like that they can incorporate into any of their outfits.
