Smart Skin Care

Don't let your skin suffer during the haze spell

brought to you by NAVEEN Organics

We’re all feeling the impact of the haze in South East Asia this couple of weeks. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s biggest city with a population of 7.2 million, recorded an API of 157, making visibility a problem. This is also believed to be the highest API (air pollution index) reading in the city since the last haze crisis in 2015. This is not the first time nor the last you’ll be hearing this reminder - DO take special care of your face and body skin during this period.

But what works best for our skin care?

Truly, while there is plenty of research to show that pollution has a detrimental effect on our skin, science is yet to uncover the best mode of defence against it.

Rather than spending a fortune of ‘anti-pollution’ products, the majority of experts recommend instead, investing in a good quality cleanser (be it face or body), an antioxidant serum, an SPF and one anti-pollution shield or mist that you can apply under or on top of make-up wherever you are.

The best and most important project you'll ever work on is yourself! But first, let's take a look at skin care and how you can shield yourself from the terrible haze.

CLEANSING is paramount!

Haze occurs when there are dust and smoke particles accumulate in relatively dry air. The haze smog is definitely going to form a layer of grimy dust on your face and body skin, so make sure you cleanse them off. It's not just about removing make-up.

Smog and dust can create free radicals (highly charged oxygen molecules) when they come in touch with UV rays. Free radicals attack our cells and damage our DNA, which can cause harm to our body and damage to our skin. Free radicals are the greatest culprit to problems like discolouration, Toxin in the air can also cause our skin to age prematurely as well as dryness.

While there are many cleansers for both facial and body out there, choosing a good one doesn't have to be rocket science. Basically, here are the things you need to look out for when choosing a cleanser:

  • Cream/Milk/Mousse type - This type of cleanser offer a more soothing cleanse than gel wash. For some people, they prefer to place a small amount on cotton pad and wipe it all over their face before rinsing it with water. However, putting some on the palm of your hand and working it onto your face will still work just fine. For extra cleansing, gently buff your face with cotton washcloth or fine muslin cloth. This method is not as abrasive as using face scrub so you can do it daily.

  • Gel wash type - Typically, gel cleansers need to be thinned out with a little water because of its thick consistency. As some gel cleansers have drying effect because of the chemicals used to make them lather, make sure your choice of gel cleanser doesn't contain SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) as this compound strips the skin natural oil and makes skin more sensitive.

  • Micellar water - Think of this as something halfway between a cleanser and a toner. Micellar water is a simple and effective way to remove make-up and dirt. Apply some amount to cotton pad and wipe it all over your face. While some feel one application is enough, many prefer a second wash to remove any micelles (the tiny round balls of cleansing oil molecules floating in the water) residue. Micellar water is also suitable for those with eczema or sensitive skin as it provides really gentle cleanse.

  • Melting balm cleanser - This seems to be the favourite option for cleanser nowadays. Not only it's economical because you only need a small amount to warm it between your palm, it's also strong enough to remove waterproof mascara. A good balm cleanser will help clear congested pores, remove deep impurities, and nourish dull skin without overly drying.

I regret taking good care of my skin - said  NO ONE, Ever!

While taking care of your skin may seem like an arduous regime at first, but if you have been cultivating the habit since you're young, then skin care is now part of you that you'd definitely something is wrong if you were to skip your routine.

Even if skin care is something you do next to breathing, it's extra important for you to do so when the weather is plagued with heat and haze. Other than keeping your skin clean and free from any dirt and grime, it's equally important to block impurities from your skin. A good moisturiser not only helps to lock in the good stuff you've put on your face, but also helps to block out from pollutant to create barrier between your skin and the environmental aggressors.

If you're looking for amazing moisturiser, here is our recommendation:

Remember, good skin comes from the inside

Other than using good products in your skin care regime, you also need to pay attention to what you consume. This is because a good diet is a battle half-won when it comes to good skin care.

With the haze causing you to feel suffocated, make sure you load up on vitamin C and E as well as drink as much water as you can. This will help in zapping away the free radicals in your body and reverse its effects. If you think you’re not getting sufficient vitamin C in your diet, take a multivitamin supplement. Again, remember, drinking lots of water keeps your skin hydrated and cell metabolism optimal.
