Dazzling Deepavali

Autumn has quickly arrived this year and for many of those celebrating the Hindu New Year, it means Deepavali is around the corner. Deepavali or Diwali is celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs worldwide that signifies new beginnings and the victory of good over evil, and light over darkness. Dipa itself is Sanskrit for “light, illuminates or knowledge” and avali means “a series or continuous line”.

Style & Beauty : Fashion Trends

With that being said, let me light the way for you guys on a range of styles to wear this festive season.

Just like people, fashion keeps on evolving with time while reflecting where we are and where we are heading. Fashion has always been a fun creative outlet for me, and as far as I’m concerned is also like sports how it brings people together (or is this taking it a bit too far? Whoops).

I was definitely drooling over this season’s trends and looking forward to seeing them appear in my Instagram feed soon.

Dazzling cream crop top and lehenga by

My number one favourite is the flirty crop top with maxi skirt. Whereas I’m not usually known to like girly pieces, I immediately let out a dreamy sigh when I saw it as it is a modern and playful representation of the traditional lehenga choli.

It is also a cross cultural marriage of a majestic Mughal traditional wear from India with the flirtatious Italian Dolce & Gabbana if I may say so. This look is also favoured by Bollywood celebrities such as the new breakout star that is the very pretty Jahnvi Kapoor, whereas the feline-like Sonam K Ahuja cleverly accessorizes it with coordinated jackets. I can see this worn past Deepavali like while you’re out having brunch with your girlfriends catching up on life or killing it at events where looking drop dead gorgeous is required.

The next favourite look is embroidered everything which I think everyone regardless of age would gravitate towards because of its feminine charm.

With an upgraded 80s feel, the exaggerated floral motives seen on the India Couture Fashion Week 2018 runway seem to be inspired by regal Islamic and Mughal architectures from days of yore. Beautifully stitched into pastel outfits, going through pictures for this trend felt like a cotton candy dream with hints of pearls and sequins sewn together here and there for a luxe feel.

This has greatly inspired me to vandalize my old denim jacket with floral sticker patches to recreate that “explosion of lace” look as quoted by Han Christian Andersen when he visited the Alhambra in Spain.

Going for a more bohemian look? Then let’s twirl, twirl, twirl prettily in a ruffled lehenga skirt! Just the thought of this is getting me all heart-eyed emoji.

Ruffles has such a long and diverse history that originated from Spain when soldiers wore several layers of clothing to reveal the fabric underneath. Brought to life over and over again throughout fashion history, it is actually a unisex trend during the Elizabethan era worn by royalty and revolutionaries as a symbol of power (think Shakespeare In Love starring the ethereal grace of Gwyneth Paltrow and the devastatingly beautiful Joseph Fiennes) and has only been associated with girlishness mid last century. Gives you a fresh perspective on ruffles now, doesn’t it?

You’re welcome.

Capes and ponchos are hot this autumn as they are back in fashion.

Sheer, embellished, long or cropped, it is a wonderful piece that can immediately elevate your outfit. This is also another trend you can wear past the holiday season and recycle as a go-to piece for future events because it has such a minimalistic silhouette with maximum flair and drama. Or you can simply put on your dupatta and pin it from behind to make it look as though you’re wearing a poncho or cape. Effortless instant upgrade! Capes are seen everywhere on other international runways and big names as well such as Saint Laurent, Salvatore Ferragamo and Dior, so you can bet it’s a pretty big trend.

“Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” The icy Miranda Priestly of the forever legendary The Devil Wears Prada is still right, why follow the usual cycle of fashion trends when you can break them?

Fashion favours the bold, so why not opt for floral prints for autumn? Which is exactly what designers did at Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn-Winter such as Shyamal & Bhumika and Abraham & Thakore. Fact is, Valentino and Miu Miu are among the fashion powerhouses also endorsing big blooms for their Fall ’18 collection. So while the monsoon season is coming into full swing in our own country, let’s keep ourselves a little cheery with bold floral prints.

We would like to wish all those celebrating a very Happy Deepavali, and may this new year bring immense light, love, health and peace for everyone. Now let’s go multiply all those lovely things by celebrating them together as only Malaysians know how to!
