Wherever there is an event in the city, there will always be a team of photographers weaving their way through the crowd to get their shots. There are some decent ones who gets the job done, and there are others whose photography makes you stop scrolling for a second to admire its aesthetics. And then there is photography done by All Is Amazing founder Paul Staniunas that is a whole different level of jaw dropping wow. Going through their Instagram feed, the play of lights, colors and human emotions demands your full attention and you will yield.

Famous for covering fashion shows and nightlife events, Paul does portraits too and has also photographed the country’s premier Tun Dr. Mahathir for the global Monocle magazine. Let’s grab a cup of coffee and have a moment with the charming bespectacled gentleman.

We bet you will be, well, amazed!

Was it photography that you were studying when you were in China?

My course had nothing to do with photography! In fact I was studying Mandarin at Beijing Foreign Language University.

When did you discover your passion for photography?

It started when I was an exchange student in Holland, but I only polished my skills while I was in Indonesia prior to moving to China. You could say that Indonesia was where my creative development set off.

So you’re a self-taught photographer. Would you share an advice for those just starting out in photography?

Sure. If you wish to be a professional photographer or visual content creator, practice makes perfect. Nothing will make your skills and talent grow more than will and determination, not even tutorial books or Youtube videos. Just go out there and create!

How can you get noticed by major event organizers, especially on a global platform?

Work smart and be persistent. Success does not come easy. Event organizers are usually busy bees, so it’s your job to get noticed by them.

"When people fall in love from different cultures and

different races, they never question that the person

they fall in love with is different.

The thing is, when people fall in love, they don't see the difference.

What are your favourite subjects to shoot aside from nightlife and events?

Photojournalistic stories, as I really love getting to know people and recording their stories, like covering a project on an artist or successful entrepreneurs. I take pleasure in capturing their experiences through my photography, and feel very blessed to be able to do what I get to do.

Do you have any favourite photographers?

Yes, of course! I admire the work of the very talented Dedy Andrianto, Keen Meng, Hafiz Shah, Nik Ahmad Fahmi, Sunless Khan, and Ady Aizat!
